Maximizing a Compact Backyard: A French Provincial Poolside Retreat
For this classic Colonial Revival home with French Provincial influence, Baxter Gardens created a full-property landscape that complements the home’s timeless architecture while improving everyday outdoor living. The transformation began with updated front yard landscaping, where clean bed lines, layered plantings, and a French country-inspired garden enhance the brick façade, blue shutters, and overall curb appeal. An irrigation system was installed to support long-term plant health and help the landscape maintain a polished, well-cared-for appearance throughout the season.
In the backyard, a compact footprint and slight grade change called for smart landscape design and custom hardscaping solutions. Our design team used layered retaining walls to manage the slope and create elevated planting beds around the pool, adding privacy, structure, and year-round interest without overwhelming the space. To expand the outdoor living area, a secondary seating nook was added with a fire pit set into a mortared natural flagstone patio and a custom backyard putting green installed nearby using premium synthetic turf. Low-voltage landscape lighting completes the retreat, illuminating paths, highlighting trees, and extending the space into the evening.
