‘Conoy’ Viburnum

Viburnum × burkwoodii 'Conoy'

This award-winning selection is celebrated for its exceptionally dense, low-mounded habit and some of the glossiest foliage you’ll find on a viburnum. In mid-spring, dark pink buds open into abundant clusters of creamy white flowers that carry a light, pleasant fragrance. While the spring show is lovely, ‘Conoy’ really earns its keep in late summer when it produces heavy crops of bright red berries that persist for weeks before finally ripening to black. Its compact size makes it a perfect fit for foundation plantings or a low hedge, and its semi-evergreen nature ensures your garden doesn’t feel bare as the seasons shift.

Notes

Pruning: Prune as needed immediately after spring flowering to maintain shape without sacrificing next year’s buds.

Maintenance: A recipient of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Medal for its superior performance and low-maintenance needs.

Fruit Production: For the best fruit display, plant in groups or near other Burkwood cultivars like ‘Mohawk’ to encourage cross-pollination.

Soil: Highly adaptable to various soil types, including the heavy clay frequently found in the St. Louis area.

Wildlife: While the flowers attract early-season pollinators, the red-to-black berries are a valuable food source for songbirds in late summer.
