Bronze Beauty Bugleweed

Ajuga reptans 'Bronze Beauty'

This vigorous, low-growing evergreen groundcover forms a dense, carpet-like mat of attractive rosettes, providing continuous color and texture throughout the seasons. The primary ornamental feature is its glossy, bronze-purple foliage, which contrasts beautifully with the short spikes of deep blue flowers that appear in mid to late spring. It is a highly adaptable plant, handling a range of light from full sun to full shade and even tolerating heavy clay soils, though good drainage and air circulation are important in humid conditions to prevent crown rot. Its rapid spreading habit via stolons makes it an excellent choice for quickly filling in bare spots in borders, rock gardens, or under trees where grass struggles to grow.

Notes

Care: Spent flower spikes can be mowed on a high setting after blooming to tidy up the appearance. Pruning to remove dead or damaged leaves should be done in early spring.
Soil & Establishment: While it can tolerate clay soil, good drainage is critical to prevent crown rot, especially in hot, humid summers. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to ensure establishment.
Winter Maintenance: This plant is evergreen in our region. No cutting back is required; simply clean up any winter-damaged leaves in early spring.
Fertilizing: A light application of a balanced fertilizer in spring is sufficient.
Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests, but watch for crown rot, particularly in poorly drained soils and areas with poor air circulation.
Habitat: The straight species is native to Europe; this cultivar is a garden selection valued for its unique foliage color.
Wildlife: Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds with its spring flowers.
Plant Uses: Groundcover, Edging, Rock Gardens, Container plantings, Under trees, Mass plantings, Slopes.
Pet Safety: Non-toxic to dogs and cats.
Other: Not particularly tolerant of foot traffic.
