Blue Zinger Sedge

Carex flacca 'Blue Zinger'

Blue Zinger sedge is a stunning, low-maintenance perennial that offers a graceful, arching, fountain-like habit of unique blue-gray foliage. A semi-evergreen cool-season grass relative, it emerges early in the spring and provides vibrant color and fine texture throughout the growing season and into winter. It performs reliably in average garden soils but is particularly adaptable, even thriving in moist or wet conditions and partial shade, making it a versatile problem-solver for tricky landscape spots. Its non-invasive clumping nature and deer resistance make it an excellent, well-behaved choice for borders, mass plantings, or rain gardens where a unique splash of color and texture is desired

Notes

Care: Minimal care is needed. Tidy up declining foliage in late winter or early spring by hand-raking or a light shearing to refresh the clump before new growth emerges.
Soil & Establishment: Highly adaptable to soil types including heavy clay, and performs well in wet conditions. Water consistently during the first two growing seasons to establish a deep root system.
Winter Maintenance: Foliage remains semi-evergreen, providing subtle winter interest. Trim back dead tips in late winter to refresh the appearance.
Fertilizing: Generally does not require fertilizer and performs best in lean soils.
Pests & Diseases: Highly resistant to pests and diseases; can occasionally suffer from rust in poorly draining, overly damp conditions.
Habitat: This is a garden cultivar, but the species grows naturally in damp meadows, grasslands, and marshes.
Wildlife: Provides cover for small wildlife and is a host plant for several butterfly and moth larvae, and the seeds may be eaten by birds.
Plant Uses: Excellent for rain gardens, moist borders, mass plantings, ground cover, container gardening, and pond margins.
Pet Safety: Considered non-toxic to dogs and cats according to the ASPCA.
Other: The intense blue color is more pronounced when grown in full sun, but it can handle partial shade well in hot climates.
