‘Blue Spruce’ Sedum

Sedum rupestre 'Blue Spruce' (syn. Sedum reflexum 'Blue Spruce')

‘Blue Spruce’ is a low-growing, mat-forming succulent perennial that earns its name from its distinctive, short, needle-like foliage resembling a miniature blue spruce tree. The fleshy, steel-blue leaves grow densely on spreading stems, quickly forming a tight, weed-resistant groundcover. In early to mid-summer, slender stems rise above the foliage to produce clusters of cheerful, star-shaped yellow flowers, which are attractive to pollinators. This tough, easy-to-grow cultivar is highly drought, heat, and cold tolerant, thriving in poor, rocky soils where other plants struggle.

Notes

Pruning: Best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. Cut back flower stalks after bloom if desired.

Fertilizing: Generally unnecessary; excessive nutrients can lead to weak, floppy growth. A light granular feed can be applied in early spring if soil is extremely poor.

Maintenance: Extremely low-maintenance. Can be propagated easily by stem segments stuck in the ground.

Habitat: Excellent for rock gardens, green roofs, containers, or massed plantings along border fronts. It drapes well over stone walls.

Other: The foliage texture is its main ornamental feature, offering a unique contrast to other plants.
