Legend of the Fall® Bottlebrush Fothergilla

Fothergilla × intermedia 'ASCO01' (PP25316)

This hybrid selection is a multi-season standout that combines the best traits of its parentage, offering a sophisticated architectural form and exceptional resilience. In early spring, the naked stems are tipped with honey-scented, creamy-white terminal spikes that resemble small bottlebrushes, providing an elegant contrast against dark mulch or emerging perennials. As the season progresses, the leathery, blue-green foliage provides a cool, clean look that remains free of the powdery mildew often seen in other shrubs. Its true crowning glory arrives in autumn, when the leaves transform into a brilliant, kaleidoscopic display of glowing oranges, vibrant yellows, and deep reds, often holding its color longer than the species.

Notes

Care: Pruning is rarely necessary but should be done immediately after flowering in spring if shaping is desired to avoid removing next year’s blooms.
Soil & Establishment: While it prefers acidic, well-drained soils, it adapts well to heavy clay if amended with organic matter; provide deep, weekly watering during the first two growing seasons to ensure successful establishment.
Fertilizing: Apply an acidic-tone or balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring before flowers emerge.
Pests & Diseases: Highly resistant to most pests and diseases, including powdery mildew, which is a common concern for the genus in humid environments.
Habitat: The parent species are typically found in the Southeastern United States in pocosins, swamps, and woodland edges.
Wildlife: The fragrant spring flowers are a vital nectar source for native bees and various pollinators; the dense branching provides nesting cover for songbirds.
Plant Uses: Foundation, Mixed Border, Native Garden, Mass Planting, Modern/Contemporary.
Other: This hybrid is a cross between Fothergilla gardenii and Fothergilla major, selected specifically for its spectacular and consistent fall color.
