‘Blue Muffin’ ® Viburnum

Viburnum dentatum 'Blue Muffin' ® (PP10665)

The ‘Blue Muffin’ viburnum is a compact, dense, and reliable deciduous shrub that provides multi-season interest in the garden. In late spring to early summer, it features showy, flat-topped clusters of creamy white flowers that attract a host of pollinators. The main attraction, however, appears in late summer: abundant clusters of stunningly vibrant, blueberry-like, dark blue fruits that persist into winter if not eaten by birds. The glossy green foliage transforms into a beautiful mix of orange and red in the fall, making this an excellent specimen for a mixed border or a focal point.

Notes

Maintenance: Low maintenance. Prune immediately after flowering to shape.

Habitat: Excellent for borders, mass plantings, rain gardens, or as a informal hedge due to its tolerance of wet soils and urban pollution.

Wildlife: The berries are an important food source for birds, and the plant serves as a host plant for the Spring Azure butterfly.

Fruiting: Plant another compatible Viburnum dentatum cultivar nearby (e.g., ‘Chicago Lustre’ or the straight species) to ensure adequate cross-pollination for the best fruit set.
