Care: No deadheading is necessary to promote continuous bloom, but trimming back spent flower stems can encourage more flowers. Cut back the entire plant to a height of 3-4 inches in mid-spring before new active growth begins.
Soil & Establishment: Good soil drainage is essential for winter survival. It performs poorly in heavy, unamended clay soils that retain moisture. To improve drainage, plant in a raised bed or on a slope. Water new transplants regularly during the first growing season; reduce watering greatly in the second season.
Winter Maintenance: The flower stems should be left in place over winter for additional protection from the cold.
Fertilizing: Requires very little fertilizer. A single application of a balanced, slow-release organic fertilizer in the fall or early spring is sufficient.
Pests & Diseases: No serious insect or disease problems, but watch for rust, powdery mildew, and leaf spots, especially in humid or poorly drained conditions.
Habitat: This is a cultivated hybrid and does not have a natural habitat, but its parent species are found in rich woodlands and thickets.
Wildlife: Flowers are an excellent, long-lasting nectar source for honeybees, native bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Plant Uses: Sunny borders, Cottage gardens, Butterfly/Pollinator gardens, Herb gardens, Cut flower gardens, Container plantings.
Other: The fragrant leaves have a licorice or minty-anise scent and can be used to make tea or in potpourri.
