‘Bloomerang Dark Purple’ Lilac

Syringa × 'Bloomerang Dark Purple' (also known by its cultivar name 'SMSJBP7')

‘Bloomerang Dark Purple’ is a compact, reblooming deciduous lilac shrub that provides an extended season of color and fragrance, unlike traditional lilacs that bloom only once in the spring. This hybrid features deep purple buds that open into classic, fragrant, dark purple flowers in a showy spring display. After a brief rest period to produce new growth, it blooms again from mid-summer until the first frost. This cultivar forms a dense, rounded, and bushy shape with small, mildew-resistant green leaves, making it an excellent, low-maintenance choice for foundation plantings, mixed borders, or containers.

Notes

Pruning: Prune immediately after the spring bloom to shape the plant and encourage new growth for summer/fall reblooming. Avoid pruning in fall, winter, or early spring, as this removes buds for the next bloom cycle.

Fertilizing: Fertilize in spring and again after the initial spring bloom to support its continuous flowering habit.

Maintenance: Highly disease-resistant, particularly to powdery mildew, which can be an issue for older lilac varieties.

Habitat: Highly tolerant of urban conditions.

Other: A great choice for cut flowers due to its long bloom time and strong fragrance.
