Blonde Ambition Blue Grama

Bouteloua gracilis 'Blonde Ambition' (PP22048)

This exceptionally large and robust selection of a native prairie grass brings unique, long-lasting architectural interest to the garden. Its most striking feature is the profusion of showy, chartreuse, flag-like flower heads that hover horizontally above the foliage on stiff, resilient stems, swaying gracefully in the breeze. These delicate “eyelashes” mature to a lovely blonde color and persist through the winter months, offering extended seasonal value. The fine-textured, blue-green foliage forms a dense, upright clump that is highly adaptable and durable once established, thriving in the toughest, driest conditions with minimal maintenance. It is a true low-water, high-impact plant for a sustainable landscape.

Notes

Care: Cut back the old stems to a few inches above the ground in mid-spring, just as new green growth begins to emerge. Minimal maintenance is required throughout the growing season.
Soil & Establishment: It performs best in well-drained soil and tolerates poor, shallow, and rocky conditions, but avoid poorly-drained, wet soils, especially in winter. During the first two growing seasons, ensure consistent moisture to promote faster filling in and establishment of its deep root system.
Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not necessary in native soils. If desired, apply a light, balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
Pests & Diseases: No major pests or diseases are generally an issue. It is particularly resistant to most common grass problems when not over-watered.
Habitat: The parent species is a dominant grass in dry shortgrass prairies and found on plains and open rocky woodlands across much of North America.
Wildlife: Serves as a host plant for skipper butterfly larvae. The seed heads provide a valuable food source for ground-feeding birds, such as finches, in autumn and winter.
Plant Uses: Excellent for Mass Plantings, Rock Gardens, Native Meadows, and as an accent or specimen plant in Contemporary or Modern landscapes.
Pet Safety: This species is not listed as toxic to dogs or cats by the ASPCA.
Other: This selection was a 2011 Plant Select winner and is known for its exceptionally long-lasting seed heads that pop up even after heavy snowfall.
