Black Scallop Bugleweed

Ajuga reptans 'Binblasca' (PP15815)

This vigorous groundcover is prized for its large, glossy, dark purple-black, scalloped leaves that form a dense, mat-forming carpet, providing an excellent textural contrast to lighter-colored plants. While it produces short spikes of deep blue flowers in spring that attract pollinators, its primary ornamental value is in its nearly black foliage, which achieves its deepest color in full sun. This cultivar is known for spreading quickly via stolons (runners) and is remarkably adaptable, tolerating a range of light and soil conditions, including the heavy clay common in our area. However, it is important to provide good air circulation and adequate drainage to prevent crown rot in hot, humid summers.

Notes

Care: Low maintenance; spent flower spikes can be mowed on a high setting to tidy the appearance after blooming. Good air circulation is essential to prevent crown rot.
Soil & Establishment: It tolerates clay soil but requires good drainage. Avoid planting in wet, heavy soils where crown rot can be a problem, especially in hot, humid conditions. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to ensure establishment.
Winter Maintenance: (Use for Perennials and Groundcover Only) This plant is evergreen in the St. Louis area. No cutting back is required; simply clean up any dead or damaged leaves in early spring.
Fertilizing: A light application of a balanced fertilizer in spring is sufficient; divide when clumps become overcrowded.
Pests & Diseases: Generally resistant to pests and diseases, but watch for crown rot, particularly in poorly drained soils.
Habitat: The straight species is native to Europe, northern Africa, and southwestern Asia; this is a cultivated mutation discovered in a nursery setting.
Wildlife: Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
Plant Uses: Groundcover, Edging, Rock Gardens, Container plantings, Under trees where grass struggles.
Pet Safety: Non-toxic to dogs and cats.
