‘Back in Black’ Sedum

Hylotelephium × 'Back in Black' PP33632

This robust, upright perennial is a dramatic addition to the sun garden, featuring some of the darkest foliage available among sedums. The succulent leaves emerge burgundy in spring and quickly deepen to an intense, near-black color that holds all summer long. In late summer to early fall, dense clusters of tiny, star-shaped flowers with creamy white petals and contrasting deep garnet-red centers appear, providing a stunning contrast against the dark leaves. Its strong, sturdy stems do not flop, and the spent flower heads offer valuable winter interest and a food source for birds.

Notes

Pruning: Cut back old stems to the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Pinching new growth in early summer can encourage a bushier habit.

Fertilizing: Do not fertilize heavily; growing in poor to average soil helps maintain strong stems and intense foliage color.

Maintenance: Very low-maintenance, thriving in conditions like heat, drought, and urban pollution.

Habitat: Excellent for borders, rock gardens, mass plantings, or as a “thriller” plant in containers.

Other: Part of the “Rock ‘N Grow®” collection and a 2021 National Garden Bureau Green Thumb Award winner.
