‘Baby Kim’ Lilac

Syringa × 'Baby Kim' ('SMNSDTP' PP32,969)

‘Baby Kim’ lilac is a dwarf, compact, deciduous shrub that is an improved version of the classic ‘Miss Kim’ variety. It is celebrated for its glossy, dark green foliage that often turns bronze or reddish-purple in the fall, providing multi-season interest. In mid to late spring, the plant is covered in an abundance of fragrant, dark purple buds that open to lavender-purple flowers, notably retaining their color rather than fading to white as they age. Its naturally tidy, mounded habit requires little maintenance and makes it an ideal specimen or low hedging plant for small gardens or containers.

Notes

Pruning: Pruning is generally not necessary due to its compact nature. If shaping is desired, prune immediately after the spring bloom has finished. Avoid pruning in fall, winter, or early spring.

Fertilizing: Fertilize with a slow-release fertilizer for alkaline-loving plants in the spring as new growth emerges.

Maintenance: Highly resistant to common lilac issues like powdery mildew and disease. Requires good air circulation.

Habitat: Highly tolerant of urban pollution and various soil types.

Other: The flowers have a classic, powerful fragrance and are excellent for use as cut flowers.
