‘Apex Blue’ Salvia

Salvia nemorosa 'Apex Blue'

This compact, well-branched herbaceous perennial produces abundant, long-lasting spikes of deep blue flowers with subtle violet overtones and burgundy calyces. The blooms appear in late spring and continue through the summer and into fall above dense, fragrant, grayish-green foliage, making it a low-maintenance choice for sunny borders, mass plantings, or container gardens. The flowers are a magnet for pollinators and are excellent for cutting.

Notes

Pruning: Remove spent flower heads (deadhead) to encourage continuous blooming. The plant is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season.

Fertilizing: Feed with an all-purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.

Maintenance: A relatively low maintenance plant that is also tolerant of heat, air-pollution, and clay soils.

Habitat: Thrives in average, well-drained soils; avoid waterlogged conditions.

Wildlife: The fragrant foliage is generally unappealing to deer and rabbits.

Other: The flowers are excellent for cutting and use in arrangements.
