Admiration® Japanese Barberry

Berberis thunbergii 'Admiration' (PP20613)

This compact, deciduous shrub is highly valued for its intense and vibrant foliage color, offering a brilliant splash of non-fading red with a distinct yellow margin. It maintains a dense, globe-like form without pruning, making it an exceptional, low-maintenance choice for structured plantings. In spring, small, inconspicuous yellow flowers appear, followed by sparse red berries in the fall. Its primary appeal in the landscape is the dynamic color that lasts from spring until frost, providing a bright visual anchor in the sunny border.

Notes

Care: Requires minimal pruning due to its naturally dense, mounded habit. If needed, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins to maintain shape.
Soil & Establishment: Highly adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including heavy clay, provided they are not constantly soggy. Water consistently during the first two growing seasons to ensure a healthy root system.
Fertilizing: A light application of a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer in early spring is sufficient. Avoid over-fertilizing to maintain the best color density.
Pests & Diseases: Generally tough, but can be susceptible to scale and aphids. Powdery mildew can occur in areas with poor air circulation. Keep an eye out for barberry loopers.
Fruit/Berry Production: Produces minimal, sparse berries, so companion planting is not necessary for fruit display.
Plant Uses: Excellent for Foundation Plantings, Borders, Mass Plantings, Modern/Contemporary gardens, and as a low hedge where color is the primary focus.
