‘Adagio’ Dwarf Maiden Grass

Miscanthus sinensis 'Adagio'

‘Adagio’ is a compact, dwarf, warm-season ornamental grass that forms dense, gracefully arching clumps of fine-textured foliage. The leaves are a slender, silvery-green through the summer, turning attractive shades of yellow, orange, and burgundy in the fall. In late summer, delicate, pink-tinged, tassel-like flowers emerge on stalks above the foliage, gradually maturing into soft, creamy-white, fan-shaped plumes that persist, providing excellent architectural interest through the winter months. This cultivar is valued for its neat size, low maintenance requirements, and drought tolerance once established, making it an excellent alternative to larger, potentially invasive Miscanthus varieties.

Notes

Pruning: Cut foliage clumps down to the ground in late winter or early spring before new shoots appear.

Maintenance: Very low maintenance. It is tolerant of heat, humidity, drought, and urban conditions.

Habitat: Excellent for mass plantings, borders, containers, or erosion control on slopes.

Other: The foliage and plumes offer significant winter interest, especially when accented by snow. This cultivar doesn’t appear to have the same invasive tendencies as the straight species.
