More Than a Trend

Outdoor Entertaining on the Rise

We’ve all been victims of trends; shoulder pads, mom jeans and jelly shoes.  But while these trends should have been avoided, some trends are definitely worth a second look.

According to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) the biggest trend in landscapes for 2013 is outdoor kitchens and entertainment spaces.  In a world where dining in and staycations are becoming the norm this is one trend that makes sense.

Fire pits, built in seat walls, pools and LED lighting have all become popular in many St. Louis landscapes but people are seeing no reason to stop there.

Fireplaces, built in grills with counter space and refrigerators are expanding our kitchens outdoors.  Beautiful stone work, pergolas, comfortable outdoor furniture and low-maintenance landscapes all add to the year-round outdoor living experience that homeowners crave.

As aesthetically pleasing as it all is, this trend offers so much more.  It invites friends to stop and chat.  It brings family together for food and fun.  And, if only for a moment, it allows us to set back and appreciate the quiet.
So while I reminisce over my doc martens, pastel swatch, and the fact that I still wish I were as cool as Molly Ringwald I dare to suggest that outdoor kitchens and entertainment spaces should be considered more than just a trend.  They offer much more to property value and way of life than my leg warmers ever did.
